Welcome to Delhi, the bustling capital city of India, where ancient history meets contemporary life. As a melting pot of cultures, and one of the largest cities in the world, Delhi offers a unique blend of heritage, spirituality, and vibrant markets. It is not every travelers favorite city as it can be quite overwhelming, but usually most people have to at least stop through for a few days. In this travel blog, I’ll take you on a journey through the top five things to do in Delhi, whether you are just passing through, or want to stay a few days.

1. Jama Masjid: A Monument of Serenity

Begin your Delhi exploration with a visit to Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque and a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. As you step inside, be awestruck by the grandeur of the white marble domes, towering minarets, and the vast courtyard that can accommodate thousands of worshipers. The serene ambiance and the panoramic view from the mosque’s minarets make it a spiritual haven in the heart of Old Delhi and offers amazing views to the next stop in Old Delhi…

2. Red Fort: A Majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site

Unravel the history of India at the magnificent Red Fort, an iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. This red sandstone fortress, dating back to the 17th century, was once the residence of Mughal emperors. Explore the sprawling complex, stroll through its ornate halls, and witness the awe-inspiring light and sound show that brings the history of the fort to life. There are no shortage of buildings on the complex and many of the open air palaces have such beautiful archways that lead you through each of the halls. Such a great place for beautiful symmetrical shots of Indian architecture.

3. Chandni Chowk: The Soul of Old Delhi

Embrace the vibrant soul of Old Delhi at Chandni Chowk, a bustling market that captures the essence of the city’s traditions and culture. Wander through its narrow alleys, where shops brim with colorful textiles, aromatic spices, and mouthwatering street food. Indulge in a gastronomic journey as you savor delicious chaats, kebabs, and traditional Indian sweets. If walking through these chaotic streets is too much for you, hail a bike taxi who pushes through the crowds for you and rests your legs as you observ e the chaos from the perch of your taxi.

4. The Spice Market: A Sensory Extravaganza

Step into a world of sensory delights at Delhi’s spice market, Khari Baoli. Lose yourself in the mesmerizing aromas of exotic spices, dried fruits, and nuts that fill the air. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, where traders and buyers haggle over the finest ingredients that add flavor to India’s culinary traditions. I have had varying degrees of luck getting to the roof of this building. It is always a complete maze trying to find the stairs and sometimes you are attacked by wild monkeys or even crazier dogs, but if you do find the roof, it offers a stunning respite from the chaos of the market and great overviews of the city below. Fair warning, I was sneezing for the next hour after my visit to this market.

5. Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place): Urban Retreat

Experience the modern face of Delhi at Rajiv Chowk, commonly known as Connaught Place. This central hub is a bustling commercial and recreational district, offering a respite from the city’s chaos. Explore the British-era architecture, enjoy shopping at high-end stores, savor international cuisine at chic restaurants, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this urban retreat.
