Welcome to Mexico City, a vibrant metropolis that encapsulates the essence of Mexico’s rich heritage and contemporary flair. This city has slowly become one of my favorite places to not only visit, but spend significant time in. It’s proximity to the United States, low cost of living, and overwhelming variety of super hip cafes and award winning restaurants means I can go over and over and never have the same trip twice. In this travel blog, we’ll take you on a journey through the top five things to do in Mexico City, where art, history, cuisine, and scenic wonders await to be discovered.
1. Bellas Artes Museum: A Treasure Trove of Art
Begin your Mexico City exploration with a visit to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a majestic cultural hub that showcases Mexico’s artistic legacy. Admire the elegant marble facade and ornate interiors adorned with murals by renowned artists like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The museum’s vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and photography offers a captivating journey through Mexican art, from pre-Hispanic times to contemporary masterpieces. As you stroll through the galleries, you’ll witness the nation’s artistic evolution, making Bellas Artes Museum an unmissable cultural gem. Not to mention that it is one of the most stunning buildings from the outside. Its central location, with golden domes and intricate sculptures outside make it a must see in this massive city. From the cafe on top of the Sears building across the street is a great place to grab a coffee and admire this beautiful piece of work. On Sundays, most of the museums and galleries are free thorughout the city so try to time your visit right to save the fee of admission.
2. Chapultepec Castle: A Royal Retreat
Immerse yourself in history with a visit to Chapultepec Castle, a striking fortress perched atop Chapultepec Hill with perfect views looking over CDMX’s business district. Once a royal residence, the castle now houses the National Museum of History, offering insights into Mexico’s historical milestones. Marvel at the opulent interiors, including the imperial quarters and grand halls, as you learn about the country’s fascinating past. The castle’s hilltop location provides sweeping views of Mexico City, making it a picturesque spot to capture memorable moments.

The neighborhood’s bohemian ambiance and welcoming vibe create the perfect setting to unwind and immerse yourself in the local culture. A must go to bakery is Panaderia Rosetta which is a great intro to the neighborhood’s hip atmosphere and incredible food culture.
4. Boat Trip in Xochimilco: A Colorful Escape
Escape the urban bustle with a boat trip through the picturesque canals of Xochimilco. Board a colorful trajinera and float along the waterways surrounded by vibrant floating gardens and charming houses. As you cruise through the UNESCO-listed site, you’ll encounter Mariachi bands and food vendors offering traditional treats. Embrace the lively atmosphere as you enjoy a traditional Mexican fiesta on the water. The boats are BYOB and one price for the entire boat, so it is not uncommon to see the boats loaded with passengers having mini fiestas as they float along the ancient canalways.
5. Day Trip to Teotihuacan Pyramids: An Ancient Wonder
Embark on a day trip to Teotihuacan, an ancient archaeological wonder just outside Mexico City. Explore the colossal pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, marveling at the engineering marvels of the pre-Hispanic civilization. Climb to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun for breathtaking panoramic views of the vast archaeological site and the surrounding landscape. Walk along the Avenue of the Dead, an ancient boulevard lined with ceremonial structures that provide insights into Teotihuacan’s once-thriving civilization.
Mexico City, with its captivating blend of art, history, cuisine, and natural wonders, promises an unforgettable journey through Mexico’s soul. There is so much more to do in this city of 20 million plus people. A few notable honorable mentions would be the Sunday vintage market in La Lagunilla, the Mezcal Museum in Plaza Garibaldi, also known for it’s mariachi performances, and walking the colorful streets of Coyoacan, home to the Frida Kahlo Museum.
